FOR MAC USERS:
This game engine is primarily for PC, so Mac's won't be able to run the game normally. In addition to downloading game, you will need to download a program called "Winebottler". Here's the link:

Mac users, please be aware that if the Winebottler program doesn't work for you for some reason, I cannot help you as I have very limited knowledge when it comes to Macs. So please, do not come to me with questions on why the game doesn't work on your Mac, because all I can tell you is that it isn't the game's fault and that I will not be able to solve your problem. Either do some online research on how to fix your problem, or try contacting someone with more knowledge on the subject of Winebottler or running PC programs on Macs in general.
Greetings Pokémon fans! My name is Sean (on the internet I prefer to be called SilentGamer64) This is a game I've been working on for the past year or so. My goal with this project is to create the first fan-made Pokémon game that encompasses the first four generations of regions. So with that in mind, let me introduce to you Pokémon Trident Version!
The game is free-to-play and will feature all Pokémon and regions from Generations 1-4. I could have worked all the way up to Generations 5 and 6, but seeing that four different regions is already very ambitious as it is, I’m just going to cut it off at Generation 4. Anyhow, moving on...
A few things explained in more detail:
- Transitioning Between Regions (General):
This is the most controversial part of most multi-gen proposals for Pokémon games. My system is a mix of ideas I’ve found on the internet combined with ideas of my own. So here’s the deal with Region switching:

As Pokémon Trident Version is a WIP, there will be some very noticable things in the game that are either unfinished, visually sloppy, or inaccurate to the Gen 3 aesthetic that I'm going for. This includes battle animations, the battle menus, and other related graphics. These are things that I decided to hold off on until I can get more feedback and see how well the game does in terms of reception. You can also expect to see various bugs and glitches pop up within the game. Obviously I've done as much as I can to give players the best experience possible, but nobody's perfect. If you do find errors, bugs, glitches, etc, please report them in the Bug Reporting section HERE.
So now that you're informed about Pokemon Trident Version, you're probably ready to give it a try. Click on the link at the top of the post to download it. Enjoy!
NOTE: If your work was represented in this game without being credited, or you have questions/concerns about how I credited you and your work, please contact me either here on the forums through PM, or at spc543@att.net so we can sort it out. I make it my mission to fairly credit every piece of work used in Trident, but if your work was misrepresented on the website I obtained it from, or if I misrepresented your work by mistake, I apologize and encourage you to contact me so we can work it out.
DISCLAIMER: As this is a game that is using the Pokémon name, characters, and environments, I am not allowed to make any money off of Trident. That being said, this also means that players cannot make any money off of it either, or else they risk the entire project getting shut down. With this in mind, please do not solicit this game for money. If you plan to stream or post pictures or videos of the game on sites like Youtube, please be sure to adhere by that site's copyright policy. The fewer run-ins this game has with Nintendo, Game Freak, and the like, the better.

- INSTRUCTIONS FOR DOWNLOADING:
1. If the link doesn't take you directly to mediafire, please be patient and wait a few seconds before clicking the "skip" button in the top right corner.
2. The game is around 3GBs, so it might take slower computers longer to download. Please also be sure to leave enough space to save the game if your computer doesn't have enough already.
3. Once the game is downloaded, you should have a new .zip file titled "Pokemon Trident Version". Move it to wherever you want, and extract it in that location. The extraction process may also take a while, but hopefully not as long as the download.
4. Once the game file is extracted, open it up. In it you should see a few files. DO NOT MESS WITH THESE FILES OR YOU WILL RISK BREAKING PART OF THE GAME. The only file you need to run the game is an application file labeled "Game" that has a little gold/yellow circle icon. This file will run the game.
NOTE: If you want a shortcut for your desktop or something, DO NOT DRAG THE "Game" APPLICATION FILE OUT OF THE GAME FOLDER OR ELSE THE GAME WILL NOT WORK. Instead, right click on the application file, click "create shortcut", and then move that newly created shortcut wherever you want.

The game is free-to-play and will feature all Pokémon and regions from Generations 1-4. I could have worked all the way up to Generations 5 and 6, but seeing that four different regions is already very ambitious as it is, I’m just going to cut it off at Generation 4. Anyhow, moving on...
- Graphic Style:
Generation 3. More specifically, Fire Red and Leaf Green graphics. I am aware that the internet constantly puts Generation 3 under fire, but then again, when does the internet not put stuff under fire?
There are a couple of reasons why I picked Generation 3 graphics over others, but to keep it short, I find Gen 3 graphics to be the easiest to manage (plus the engine came with almost everything from FR/LG), and they also give a bit of a throwback vibe to the 2-D nature of Gens 1 and 2 while still remaining fairly aesthetically pleasing. Gen 3’s graphics are also the most efficient to use, since Kanto, Hoenn, and even bits and pieces of Johto are already completely laid out for me to reference. This means that I basically only have to draw up 1.5 regions from scratch instead of having to re-map up to 4 entire regions when using other graphics.
- Plot:
- The plot of the game is basically going to mimic the plots of the first 4 generations of Pokémon games. In other words, you'll be fighting off Team Rocket in the Kanto and Johto regions, Team Aqua/Magma in Hoenn, and Team Galactic in Sinnoh. In each of the four regions, your end goal is to take on the Elite Four, become the Champion of that region, and then move on to the next region, rinse and repeat. Obviously filling out the Pokedex will be the ultimate end goal, but I've already planned an additional end-game area where you can put your battling skills to the test against the one true Pokémon Master within this game (who could it possibly be???).
- New Features (both finished and planned):
- All 4 regions from Gens 1-4 will be accessible, including the Sevii Islands from Fire Red/Leaf Green, and a "secret" region that I have planned for the end-game.
- Actually allowing the player to be able to "catch 'em all" with no strings attached. In other words, all 493 Pokémon from Gens 1-4 will be obtainable in-game, without the need for trading or traveling miles to events.
- Multiple save files (I believe I made it three save files max, maybe more).
- PokeGear system returning from Gen 2, redesigned and revamped.
- Banking system similar to the player's Mom from Gold/Silver, only without the frivolous spending, and it's in an actual bank. Includes ATM style online banking that will be accessible on any PC.
- Ability to re-map button controls. I shouldn't have to dictate what controls you use, so map your buttons at your own discretion. Just be aware that certain function buttons won't map properly other than F5, which is the "select" button by default. But there's still 10 numbers and 26 letters in the alphabet, so hopefully there aren't too many issues in that regard.
- While you technically start out as Red or Green (depending on your gender) in Pallet Town, your character's appearance isn't sent in stone like in most Pokémon games. I plan on including an outfit system that allows you to obtain and wear different outfits of other iconic characters, including each of the four different male and female trainers that were playable characters throughout the first four generations of Pokémon games.
- A "Link Cable" item that will help you get the trade-evolution Pokémon in their final forms without actually having to trade between this game and that other nonexistent version that I don't plan on making. It basically works like an evolution stone, but only for Pokémon that are traded to evolve.
- A few new Pokémon moves that I plan on making.
- More new features may come later on. REASONABLE ideas and suggestions are welcome. Be sure to post them in the Suggestions section.
- General Progress of the Game:
Basically, I'm finished with Kanto (by "finished", I'm talking about the whole story of R/B/Y/FR/LG, Routes, Trainers, Gyms, and Elite Four), and I added in the Sevii Islands from Fire Red/Leaf Green for additional places to explore. That being said, considering the fact that I decided to go with gen 3 graphics, the Alpha build of my game will probably look like a slightly modified Fire Red/Leaf Green reskin, which is a fair point of criticism. However, I promise that more is coming, and hopefully when the player transitions over to Johto they will see that.
Besides finishing stuff for the Alpha release and completing the game in general, things that I still have left to do include:
- Move animations. The default move animations the engine provides are god awful, and most of them aren't even there. That being said, I'm not complaining since I would rather have an engine with few move animations and most of the gameplay mechanics complete than an engine with all the move animations complete and almost no gameplay mechanics present. Since I'm going for a Gen 3 art style, the move animations will reflect that art style. However, I may not finish all the move animations before I release the Alpha, which is more of a gameplay test than a graphics showcase. That will be saved for the final release.
- Menu/UI Elements. These are in just as bad of a state as the move animations. I fixed a majority of the menus to a Gen 3 appearance, but the battle menu UI is still using the default essentials graphics. I wasn't able to fix the graphics before releasing the Alpha, but I will most definitely have it fixed by the next big update to make it look more consistent with the rest of the game's graphics.
- For anyone who is wondering, all moves from Gens 1-4 will be present in the game. Nothing more (besides a few of my own new custom made moves), nothing less.
- Controls:
A few things explained in more detail:
- Transitioning Between Regions (General):
This is the most controversial part of most multi-gen proposals for Pokémon games. My system is a mix of ideas I’ve found on the internet combined with ideas of my own. So here’s the deal with Region switching:
- Spoiler:
When you complete the Sevii Islands quest and beat the Elite Four for the second time in Kanto, Professor Oak will confront you outside of your house in Pallet Town and tell you to meet him in his lab. When you talk to him in the lab, he will ask you to do a favor for him that involves Professor Elm in New Bark Town. For each subsequent region you complete, the Professor of that region will always call you back to their lab for you to involve yourself with the Professor of the next region that they belong to. Elm for Johto, Birch for Hoenn, and Rowan for Sinnoh. Believe it or not, there is an official time difference between the events that take place in Red/Blue/Yellow (Kanto) and Gold/Silver/Crystal (Johto). However, I've basically retconed those few years and condensed them into one seamless transition. That being said, changes will occur in Kanto after you get to Johto, since that is a part of G/S/C's storyline later on. If you accept Oak's request, you will be locked out of the Pokémon League to encourage you to move on. However, if you tell him you’ll do the task later, you can continue exploring and training in Kanto, which won’t really show any visible signs of change (ex. Koga will still be in Fuchsia City’s Gym, Viridian City’s Gym Leader will still be Giovanni, etc). When you go to Johto and come back to Kanto, the appropriate changes will be made to follow the settings of Gen 2’s Kanto. Because these are the only two regions that actually directly conflict with each other in terms of time and events, the Hoenn and Sionoh regions will be virtually untouched when they are revisited later in the game.
As far as transitioning between the other regions is concerned, the time line doesn't really limit what can and can’t be done when going from Johto to Hoenn, Hoenn to Sionoh, etc. Therefore, unlike the awkward time frame between Kanto and Johto, accepting the Professor’s request to travel to other regions will not limit you to traveling directly to that region, and you are free to explore all the previous regions you have already been to. Sionoh is the last region, so once you beat the Elite Four of Sionoh, you will gain access to all the main regions available in the game. Also realize that some events in certain regions may not become available until other regions are completed…
- Transitioning between Regions (Changes to the Player):
- Spoiler:
Once Kanto is completed and the player arrives in Johto, Professor Elm will be in his lab with some other familiar faces. Elm will proceed to tell you that Oak wants the player to fill out the Pokedex for the Johto region. Because Oak will have already updated your Pokedex back in Kanto, Elm will instead give you his phone number, slightly furthering the usefulness of your PokeGear which did practically nothing for you in Kanto (there are reasons for this). The map is also updated, and will now show either the Kanto or Johto regions based on your current location.
As cool as it is getting some new toys, Elm will also take away most of your old ones. Your entire bag will be taken, items and all. Also, Bill will be there to take all of your Pokémon and store them in the Kanto PC system. Elm will explain that he wants you to start fresh on your journey through Johto, and will give you one of the three Johto starters shortly. Bill will then explain that since you are no longer in Kanto, you will not be able to use Bill’s PC to access your Pokémon that you caught in Kanto, including your party Pokémon that Bill just took from you. Instead, you will use a separate PC system for Johto. This is because Kanto and Johto's PC systems aren't completely linked together yet, so you will have to stick with whatever Pokémon you find in Johto until then.
This entire sequence was specifically designed with gameplay in mind. For example, if players were able to keep their Elite Four/Hall of Fame Pokémon, they would easily be able to breeze through Johto without a problem. This also prevents players from using Pokémon with HM moves that they shouldn’t have in Johto until completing certain events. In terms of items, these are taken away to prevent players from stocking up on potions to constantly heal their new, weaker Johto starter and other subsequent Pokémon that are caught at low levels. Pokeballs are taken away to prevent players from smuggling over 99+ ultra balls or their potentially unused Master Ball to make catching Pokémon easier earlier on than it should be. Most Key Items are taken away, mainly to prevent clutter, since Johto will provide you with another entire bag-full of key items. TM's and HM's will also be taken to prevent the player from using them too early, since some TM’s can provide significantly powerful moves, and HM’s allow players to access areas that they shouldn’t be able to reach yet via Cut, Surf, Fly, etc. Once this sequence is finished, Elm will then allow the player to take one Johto starter of their choosing. This is essentially how the beginning of each new region will go down, where the player will lose all their Pokémon and bag items, and will then be given a new starter Pokémon for that region.
Getting back these taken items is quite simple. When switching regions for the first time, all items will be taken by the Professor of that region and put into your drop box at the bank. You will regain access your bag once you clear that region.
Money is another issue that I've addressed when switching regions. I'm not going to allow the player to enter with thousands of dollars, because then they'll just stock up on a bunch of items which takes away from the challenge of starting fresh. Be aware that you will eventually loose all of your money once you switch regions, so it would be wise to deposit as much of it in the bank as you can beforehand.
